Barbie, Todd and legitimate progress.

As an ad writer and online dating profile writer I spend my days putting a positive spin on people. As such, I can’t help but embrace my sardonic side at least when it comes to this blog. If you like a compilation of quirky articles and commentary about men, women and advertising, then you’ll enjoy this read.

I was going to write a blog inspired by events in Russia where Madonna is being sued for supporting gay rights (a no-no in country where anti-gay sentiment is, ironically, as popular steam rooms) and where Pussy Riot (three feminist rockers) was sentenced to two years in jail for performing a prayer against Putin at a Moscow cathedral.

Then Todd Atkin happened.

Just when Paul Ryan’s abs have made me take a long hard look at the Republican form, I mean platform, Todd had to steal the spotlight by “misspeaking” when he labeled some rape legitimate. He then went on to describe how a woman’s body “can shut that whole thing down” and not become pregnant.

That’s a whole lot of misspeaking methinks.

Still, just when I began to think that the entire world could not be less evolved, a surprising icon of progress came fabulously forward – Drag Queen Barbie. Yes, it’s true. Mattel will be gender bending backwardness forward with this special edition bejeweled beauty to be released for Christmas.

So, in tribute to my favorite plaything (Paul Ryan’s abs are so yesterday!), this blog is about men, women and all things female.

Getting in touch with your feminine side brought to you by…yawn.

According to this article on “Be a Better Partner”, men should get in touch with their feminine side. Apparently, that includes good personal hygiene which, for years, I’ve mistakenly thought was pretty androgynous.

Come to think of it, I used to assume my friend Christine was a lesbian because she was born that way. Now I have to wonder if a nice body wash would “fix” her.

Good lord.

The article also suggests that men should go to a doctor and have a physical because, I guess, somehow, that’s feminine too.

Wow, being feminine sounds like such fun, doesn’t it girls?

Getting in touch with your masculine side brought to you by the 1950’s.

Being a sucker for my own cynicism, I searched “getting in touch with your masculine side” and found myself right back on “Be a Better Partner”. Imagine my delight.

Here are some tips for woman: wear boxers, don’t talk about feelings for one whole day and – get in the driver’s seat. At that final suggestion, the article added the word “literally” with not one, not two, but three exclamation marks.

How feminism helps men.

For advice that’s actually helpful and has depth, I suggest The Good Men Project. It’s a site that I’ve previously made reference to because I like it so much. It treats both men and women with dignity.

When you read this article on the 5 Ways Feminism Helps Men I think you’ll like the site too. It’s such a good resource.

Sexist ads of the 1950’s

ads-9No dating blog by me would be complete without featuring an ad and, of course, there’s no better way to end this blog than to feature ads that take us back to a time when oh, I guess, someone like Todd Atkin may have been born. Given the era, I hope these ads don’t leave a bitter taste in your mouth.

What do sexist ads have to do with online dating profiles? They remind us how important it is to treat each gender with respect and – even more importantly – to treat each person as an individual versus a gender.

On that note, to help you bring out what makes you distinct, be sure to complete my personality quiz. It sounds like a gimmick, but it’s not. It’s a great way to help you uncover unique aspects that you can feature on your dating profile so that you stand out from the crowd (and the competition).

Even better  – submit your answers to me. Not only am I trained to make you stand out, I use all your words and anecdotes to do it (making your dating profile 100% genuine). Not sure? Then check out my samples of online dating profiles and see for yourself. Finding love and finding a job are among some of life’s most important goals. It’s worth the investment.
