GETTING READY FOR GETTING MARRIED.

Mid-November. I stepped on a plane very early on a Monday morning. This was it! My trip for Wedding One.

The luggage was ridiculous. There was a good ten pounds of candy for wedding favours, table coverings, and my gifts for family and my new groom — far too much for my modern, sleek suitcase, so I dragged an old, but sturdy American Tourister out of storage.  Everything fit, but it was heavy. And the old valise had only two wheels. The idea was to tilt it and drag. I was also balancing a carry-on and handbag. This was going to be interesting.

On the second leg of my flight, I travelled with my officiant, an old friend from school who lives in the U.S., had herself specifically ordained for the event.

I had organized a rental car, which presented the first challenge for my jumbo-bag — the rental parking lot was on the other side of the airport, and my wobbly, oversized suitcase wasn’t exactly designed for efficient movement. Especially when overpacked. And we had to walk.

Let’s just say I had my first physical workout of the week.

We were warmly welcomed by JGS and family.  I was VERY glad to get rid of that bag!

Even JGS struggled with it.

The candy was quickly distributed into the little plastic “glass” slippers and tulle bags.

Gifts handed out, and a few hours of quiet before the days of pre-wedding activities began.

We had decided to stay at the state park for two days, including Thanksgiving, since the pavilion was a nice hall for a big holiday dinner that included about 30 people.

We provided the hall, and the guests were bringing food. It would be a breeze.

Right.

COUNTDOWN  ON!

There are so many reasons I fell in love with JGS. One is his sensitivity to my needs, especially the need to sometimes slow down. So when he announced we were both going for massages two days before the wedding, I couldn’t have been happier. It was not a romantic couples-massage, but a very thorough and relaxing event for both of us in separate rooms.

We needed it to prepare for the marathon days ahead!

With the Thanksgiving holiday approaching, many stores were either crowded or closing early.

Luckily some things, like the flowers, were delivered to the house. It took on the feel of a nursery as we gathered buckets and vases to keep them fresh.

Some stores took another approach. The men’s clothing rental store for JGS’s wedding duds opened only in the afternoon, as we discovered when dropping by in the morning!

Once that was off the check-list, we were about to pour a glass of wine to relax, when suddenly, we remembered: The hams! Thanksgiving was going to be potluck, and this was our contribution. A hurried trip to the specialty meat store, and one more task accomplished.

Luckily we had help with the check-list of tasks. His friend from work was handling flowers and the cake.

And JGS wanted to make sure I had a girls-night out with my friend —  he found one of the nicest restaurants in town for us to enjoy, and sent flowers and chocolate. He also organized things so that a waitress came to our table and read a poem he’d chosen for the occasion.

Then he took everyone out for another fancy dinner on a separate night.

Think I might just marry this guy.

TURKEY TIME

The night before Thanksgiving, the house was packed full of people (JGS’s  brother and girlfriend had arrived), cooking and bags to pack. Remember, we had to be at the state park for both Thanksgiving and the wedding on Friday. Talk about a festive holiday!

Our convoy of overpacked vehicles headed out for the one-hour drive, just one hour late.

All cabins but one were ready for us, so we headed to the pavilion to set up for the Thanksgiving meal. And already gave thanks that JGS’s friend lived nearby. He’d checked the area the day before, only to find the park had closed down the washroom facilities for the season!  He had to chase down the right person, but they were opened in time for our events.

Phew! As we said in an earlier installment, toilets ARE essential to any event.

A bit of an uproar over food heating, as there were not enough ovens. People were asking JGS questions about everything.  I caught the look on his face, and knew he needed a break. I suggested we check on the one cabin that had not been ready.

We did just that, and crashed for a nap. Packing, cooking and demands from guests had taken their toll. The hour or so of quiet was just what the doctor ordered. When we returned to the pavilion, some people nodded knowingly — if only they knew we’d been much too tired for hanky- panky!

Some people had left, taking most of the food with them.

Those who stayed stood up to offer help. Before we knew it, tables and chairs were being set up, balloons and photos installed, and bulk flowers being transformed into glorious fall-coloured displays.

It was gorgeous. The wedding was the next day.
