UnknownTwo online dating articles have made the news recently. One was written by a female comedy writer who wrote the worst online dating profile ever then posted it on okCupid, only to find that men were still interested.

The article was written in jest. Yet, news sources from ABC to Huffington Post, touted it as a social experiment that reflected poorly on men online dating.

Yesterday another article made news because, presumably, it too was a revealing social experiment. This time a guy posed as a woman on okCupid only to remove his profile two hours later because men were brutes.

That these two articles are being considered newsworthy social experiments is just stupid. Are they fun? Yes. Are they accurate and conclusive commentary? Oh please. I’m shocked at our news agencies. Even the venerable Time magazine chimed in.

Why the news on online dating is more questionable than online dating itself.

For one, how you write your profile, as well as the photos you choose to post, can attract the wrong types of matches just as easily as it can weed them out. As such, the only big social commentary here is that the dating profile presentation attracted the wrong types.

For another, both writers posted their fake profiles on okCupid – a free site and a free-for-all for singles and couples – straight, gay and bi – looking for everything from serious relationships to seriously looking to hookup. That’s why its members love it.

Its members and/or their mentality online are vastly different than those on specifically serious paid sites like eHarmony and match.com.

My conclusion is that there’s nothing wrong with the men you’ll find online dating when you write your online dating profile to attract the right ones.
