Dear Boomer: Is your online dating profile getting old?

senior-women-datingDating profiles plastered with clichés are never interesting to read. I’ve seen “life is short”, “loves to laugh” and “live love laugh” fill up more dating profiles than pink slime bulks up burgers.

People of all ages do it and boomers are no exception.

Yet of all age groups I’ve worked with boomers are by far the ones with the most interesting anecdotes and experiences to share. After all, they’ve lived longer and overcome more.

Still, despite having years of facts and events to leverage, many fall into the tried, true and tired. That is, many of their dating profiles rely on banal descriptions and, inevitably, concern the denial of age. Here are the most popular:

Younger than my years.

Young at heart.

Not typical for my age.

Nothing could make a boomer sound older than saying something that no young person would ever think of mentioning.

More importantly, why use an ageist and aging vocabulary when you can describe yourself so much more vibrantly by celebrating your life’s highlights. You have years of anecdotes and experiences from which to cull. Pick your best ones and write about them.

Better yet, tie them into who you are and what you love today.

Here are some examples:

If you’re a woman who loves to hike you can pick an anecdote from your childhood that can segue into a present day passion: I used to slide around the kitchen in my Mom’s high heels. Today I prefer rainforests and hiking boots. I still slide though!

If you’re a man who loves dinning and traveling, maybe you can look through years of experience in both and come up with something that highlights them in a dynamic way: I ate fried spiders in Cambodia. I tried bull fries in Spain (you don’t want to know). And blood sausage in Germany. Still, my favorite meal of all time is a grilled cheese sandwich topped with a pickle.

In short, why deny your age when you can leverage your experiences in a way that gives you breadth, substance and makes you bigger than life?

Question for you.

Who are the hottest boomer celebs?

Writing your online dating profile.

I’m both an ad writer and online dating profile writer. As such, I know how to craft words using subtle marketing techniques so that you can attract the love you want. Better still, by asking a lot of questions, I’m able to do it using your words and anecdotes.
