Over the next few days I’ll critique three excerpts from dating profiles written by singles in the state of New York. The profiles were picked randomly from various websites. I’ve changed them slightly for the sake of anonymity.
Here’s the dating profile of a man in his late 30’s:
I am looking for friends first and then to see where things go. I am responsible, reliable, secure, and I have my act together. Looking for someone in the same situation. I am over all of the drama and am ready for a relationship with the right person.
I see a lot of profiles that begin with the caveat that the relationship must begin with friendship. I don’t think that’s necessary. After all, it’s very rare to meet someone for coffee or a walk and then suddenly find yourself in a committed relationship. Instead of starting a dating profile with a stipulation, start with an engaging and welcoming opener.
Also, I’m concerned by the suggestion that this person is “over all the drama”. I can’t help but wonder what caused him to have so much drama in his life in the first place. Does he have bad judgment? Does he create drama? Does he seek it?
Instead, don’t bring up the negatives in your past or present, just move forward positively.
