Online dating profiles. A How-To for Nov. 19, 2013.

match.com_Today I scanned a number of dating profiles on match.com. I found one that floored me in its inappropriateness. Usually I post excerpts from online dating profiles that have common enough mistakes so that anyone can relate.

Today’s excerpt, however, is atypical.

So why post it?

Because it addresses an inappropriateness that has less to do with the words and more to do with the site on which they’ve been posted. In other words, in some environments this dating profile would be fine. On match.com, it’s not. As such, we can all learn a lesson from it.

I am seeking a friend with benefits. A sugar baby who likes to be pampered and spoiled by an older man.

What we can all learn from this dating profile.

What everyone can learn from this dating profile is that the environment where you post your ad (be it a personal or product ad) is just as important as the ad itself.

Choose an environment populated by your ideal “customer”. If you want someone looking for a casual fling, then go on a site that caters to it like okCupid or POF.

If you want to meet someone serious then pick Match.com or eHarmony.

If you want to meet someone serious who’s also Jewish, then there’s JDate. The same applies to Christian singles.

In addition, you need to craft a profile that achieves a fine balance between being appropriate so that it fits in, but being different enough so that it stands out.

Choose your words and your environment carefully.

A final word about writing your online dating profile.

There truly is a fine line between getting attention and getting the right attention. As someone who has spent years writing advertising, I’m trained to achieve that balance.

I can make you stand out in the right way.

Better yet, I use your words and anecdotes to do it so that you go online with an honest depiction of yourself.
