Online Dating Profiles: Tips 18 and 19.

How can you write the perfect online dating profile? As an ad writer and marketing expert, I’m able to provide pertinent tips simply by following the marketing techniques I’ve learned over the past 20 years. In fact, whether you’re online dating or not, marketing is about interpersonal communication. As such, this blog can help anyone trying to communicate and connect with others.

At the beginning of every week, I critique two excerpts from real online dating profiles. Some are sent to me by readers. Others are ones that I’ve come across on the various dating sites that I scan. All are excerpts to ensure anonymity.  At the end of the week, I post a blog that’s just as information-packed, but also more entertaining. So keep an eye out for that one too. In the meantime, enjoy:

At 64 I have learned a lot from the university of life, my past is what has brought me to this point. I have no illusions of skydiving, or scuba diving. I’m a little more laid back then that. A quiet, normal relationship would be outstanding. I’m pleasant to look at, searching for the same in a man.

I have morals and values, I’m spiritual, and have a playful disposition. I’m warm and funny, and love to make people smile. I have traveled out of the country to Spain, Argentina, Chile, Hong Kong..But it always feels good to return home. My hobbies are: Cooking, Gardening, Reading, Internet Surfing, watching good movies.

It’s fine to open with warmth and self-reflection. However, no matter how seriously you begin a profile, it still needs to be dynamic. This intro isn’t. Perhaps she could have found an interesting anecdote from her past and use it as a contrast against where she is now.  In doing so, she could make the same point but in a more engaging way.

Also, before you get into what you’re looking for, you need to make clear what you offer.  You need to market your benefits right from the top so that you can entice someone into contacting you. Only at the end of your profile should you say what you’re looking for in someone else. Still, I really like the delicate, positive way she addresses the fact that she wants a man who’s similarly attractive. Very well done.

She seems to have done a lot of traveling. Rather than just list the countries, she could probably find a couple of wonderful anecdotes to intrigue the reader. The same holds true of her hobbies. If she has some fun cooking stories (and I know she does because she completed the quiz) this would be the place to share them – though concisely.

Know whats important? If so keep reading. I am out going, fun, down to earth, positive, down to earth and honest. Know the meaning of life? I do, its called honesty and trust, with out it you have nothing. “The most important ingredient we put into any relationship is not what we say or what we do, but what we are.” – Stephen R. Covey I want the kind of relationship where you can totally 100% trust your partner no matter what and in return you will get the same from me – no games, no half-truths. I want my best friend and lover.

First of all, he says down-to-earth twice. His profile also had a lot of typos, which I cleaned up. It seemed to be written quickly and sloppily. More importantly, there’s a real quality of arrogance and dominance in the way he preaches what’s important. The implication is that he knows what matters and that you better too. He also goes on about this so much that it makes me wonder if he’s been burned and not quite over it. I see a lot of red flags here.

I hope my comments have been of value (thank you to those who have sent in their profiles to be critiqued, I’ll be sure to get to them).  Feel free to return at the end of the week for my more entertaining blog (though every bit as helpful).

In the meantime, if you want to craft a better profile, you can get started by uncovering some of your unique traits using the personality quiz. It costs nothing to do, but it’s an important first step in writing an online dating profile that stands out.

Once you’ve completed the quiz, select some of the most interesting answers and incorporate into your dating profile. Better still, hire me to do it. I’m trained to know what to pick and where to put it.

Feel free to check out the online dating samples of my work, as well. If you like the blogs, then you’ll like the tweets. Would also love to see you on Facebook.
