Dear Geraldo, 70 is not the new 50.

Online dating success for boomers. To every boomer out there, let me say this: don’t trade your dignity for a cell phone self-portrait of your half-naked upper body. Look carefully through your progressive lenses and note that, while your abs may be tight, your skin isn’t. That’s because you aren’t 20. You aren’t 30. You’re not even 40. For the record, if you’re 70 then you’re also not 50 – and that’s okay. When Geraldo tweeted a half-naked selfie along… read more

A blushing bride at 55! Online dating works.

I’m an ad writer and marketing expert who uses her skills to craft great online dating profiles  (check out my dating profile examples and see). I also write a blog – usually. Over the next six weeks, I’ll be posting guest blogs by “CB” instead. CB is a lady who, after many years online,  found her soulmate.  She’ll be sharing her love story with us. Poster child for brides in their 50s by “CB” Next year, just past my 56th birthday, I’ll… read more

Dear Boomers: Would you rather bake or sizzle?

I’m an ad writer. I’m also the only online dating profile writer to combine ad techniques and conversational writing so that singles stand out.  This is my dating blog. It’s the only one you’ll find about men, women and marketing.   A friend of mine is an actress. She’s older and, by that, I mean she’s in her late 50’s – far from elderly. Still, whenever she’s cast as a grandmother, the scene inevitably shows her baking cookies or giggling… read more

Online dating the red flag of ageism.

The other day, an acquaintance asked if I could critique the online dating profile he wrote because, for some reason, it was attracting older women. This man is in his mid-50’s so it’s understandable that he’d attract other boomers. However, he’s good looking and in shape so I was surprised that he’d actually attract women who were old enough to be unappealing to him. When I probed further, I was floored to discover that his idea of older women was… read more

Demi & Ashton. Can we stop calling it cougar dating?

The other day Joy Behar tweeted about the impending divorce between Demi Moore and Ashton Kushter. Her tweet made a glib reference to Kushter being “grounded” (as in – sent to his room). I replied to the tweet with an equally glib, “I think it’s called minors emancipation”. At the time, I thought I was being clever. I since regret the callousness and prejudice of my words. In effect, I was making snide commentary about their age difference, which has… read more

Boomers and online dating. Grow up!

Some things are predictable. For instance, it’s predictable that any celebrity who does the rocker hand gesture, especially on both hands, will eventually get a DUI, make gay slurs and end up in rehab. It’s also predictable that, for every Dr. Phil and Dr. Oz, there will also be a Dr. Drew Pinsky to turn pain into self-serving sensationalism. Also predictable are: Sarah Palin and her little bus will go down in history, but she’ll know nothing  about it; the… read more

Writing your dating profile? There’s no such thing as a “young” 50 unless you’re next to a 90 year old.

I once had to rent an apartment sight unseen. The landlady said “Don’t worry. It’s charming”. When I arrived I realized that her “charming” was my “teeny”. People use objectionable adjectives all the time. To get me to go swimming, my Mom used to say the lake water was “refreshing” rather than “so cold you’ll beg hell to take you early” . I’ve also heard big boned instead of fat; tipsy instead of drunk; and creative instead of bipolar. I’ve… read more

Can 50 year old abs dating online compete with 20 year old abs dating online?

I was roller-blading the other day with a girlfriend of mine when a young hot gorgeous male in his 30’s skated by without a shirt on. She and I both nearly tripped over ourselves and yanked our necks out of place as we watched, fixated, while he sped off. I don’t care what anyone says but that moment was better than chocolate. A little later a very fit and handsome middle-aged man sped by on his inline skates. My friend… read more

Young at heart and other dating profile claims that make me want to rip someone’s dentures out.

Honest to god, nothing makes a person sound more geriatric than “young at heart”. Seriously, have you ever heard a young person say those words? No. No. No. Young people don’t say they’re young at heart any more than they’ll say they need more fiber. It just isn’t a young thing to say. Not only that, when I read the profiles of these presumably youthful, though clearly middle aged singles, they seem to mistake being young at heart with trying… read more

Are you typical for your age? Probably.

I see so many profiles of men and women in and around 50 years old who claim to be “young at heart”, “not typical for my age” and other misguided anti-aging claims. Here’s a fact about boomers: this is a progressive demographic and always has been. Boomers brought in groundbreaking, sexually provocative, “devil’s” music or, what we call today, rock and roll. Ouch, bad boomers. Boomers were also the first ones to launch full-scale protests and to demand political reforms.… read more
