Why incomplete sentences on dating profiles speak volumes.

images-1Sometimes I find dating profiles that are outrageous. I usually compile them and create a blog for my “Online Dating. The Agony.” series. This time though I’m featuring an excerpt of a man’s dating profile that, however over the top it is, nevertheless has elements worth critiquing so that you can learn from it when putting together your own.

From the dating profile of a 55-year old man.

My critique.

He has a long string of interests and yet has even strung one sentence together. This is not a thesaurus. It’s a dating profile. Maybe he was trying to be creative? Perhaps he was. However his entire profile was written like this. What I’ve presented here is just an excerpt.

So, while it’s okay to add some creative touches to your dating profile – and in fact, I highly recommend whimsy – don’t overdo it. Remember that your profile is meant to be conversational and engaging.

In addition, the actual technique of commas everywhere is visually annoying and hard to read. As such you risk turning off a reader even before they get through the first sentence.

Besides writing full sentences and addressing someone coherently, I also suggest that you layout your paragraphs with just a few sentences in each one. Dense paragraphs of copy can discourage a reader.  A lot of “text message” type copy isn’t attractive either.

So, besides how you write your profile, be sure to present the information in a way that can be easily scanned.
