Writing your dating profile. A critique for Nov. 18, 2013.

UnknownI scanned okCupid today and found a dating profile that made a lot of mistakes in terms of marketing.

In addition, though the profile says that he’s 43, the settings say that he’s actually 49. Yet, despite this age discrepancy, he mentions “honesty” as one of his traits.

Geech.

Excerpt from the dating profile of a 40-something male.

I am 43 years old. I’m a big runner and belong to just about every running group in town. I train to race competitively. I also enjoy easy runs and trail runs.

I’m honest and christian but don’t attend mass often enough and I really need to work on improving my attendance.

My Critique

It’s good to say he loves to run if it’s a passion. It’s also good to demonstrate that passion by giving examples such as being in numerous running groups.

However, he should find more interesting anecdotes.

Did anything remarkable ever happen during a race? Did he ever see something notable on one of the trails? Is there a favorite marathon that he likes to participate in?

What you, the reader, can learn from this is that, if you have a passion, then write about it with all the exuberance you actually feel.

Also, are there other activities he enjoys? Though this is only an excerpt, there was actually no mention of any other interests in his dating profile. I strongly suggest being focused and only picking a few favorites pastimes versus chaotically listing countless ones. However, one is not enough.

Lastly, that a person has to work at better mass attendance is absolutely not interesting. Your dating profile is not a journal. It’s not a diary. It’s a marketing opportunity so treat it accordingly.

A final word about writing your online dating profile.

Rather than have an average profile, have a great one with my help. As an ad writer, I’m trained to find your best traits and then put them forward in an engaging way.

Better still, because I ask a lot of questions, I  use your words and anecdotes to do it. That way, you end up with a dating profile that catches attention and keeps, all the while sounding true to you.

Check out my online dating profile samples and see for yourself. Better yet, get started by completing the personality questionnaire and then submit your answers to me. You’ll be amazed at what I can do with them.
