Writing your online dating profile. A how-to guide especially for men.

If you’re a single guy and having trouble filling out your online dating profile, then this blog will help. I’m ad writer so I’m trained to write persuasive copy with a positive spin. I’m also a profile writer who offers insights (and services) to help single men and women stand out in the competitive environment of online dating. Check out my online dating profile samples and see.

Men are brilliant at evading life-threatening questions like, “does this make me look fat”. They also know how to nod convincingly when a situation requires a clear “yes, you’re right”.  In addition, they play air guitar with more exuberance than any woman I know.

All to say, men are good at many things.

Men are less adept, however, at writing online dating profiles.

For one, many aren’t comfortable with talking about themselves. For another, they aren’t quite sure how to promote themselves without sounding as though they’re bragging. In truth, it’s a fine line that few people know how to straddle (see my talk on King 5 TV about this very subject).

So here are the top tips for men on how to write an online dating profile:

Length matters (no pun intended).

A lot of men right a few perfunctory lines of copy and think that’s good enough.  It isn’t. Instead, show effort. The ideal length for a dating profile is approximately 250 words. This is long enough to demonstrate that care enough about meeting someone to put thought and effort into it. It’s also short enough to keep a suitor’s attention without imposing too much on her time.

I run. I cycle. I swim. I sound like a tampon commercial.

Rather than truly “communicate”, a lot of men rely on lists of interests that are devoid of excitement. The result is a very dry read. Instead of listing a number of interests, write about a few favorites. Give the reader a sense of why you like them and how they manifest in your life. Provide fun anecdotes.

I’m fun, fit, reliable, nice and I do a great thesaurus imitation.

Another dry list to avoid is one made up of adjectives. Instead, use anecdotes. In the world of prose, an adjective is to an anecdote what words are to actions. Anecdotes prove that you’re what you say you are by giving an example. So if you’re fit, give an anecdote about your best hiking experience or favorite place to run. In other words, prove it. If you need help uncovering some of your most interesting anecdotes, take my short personality test. It’s not a gimmick. It’s actually a great tool to help you uncover the kind of stories and quirks that can truly engage a reader.

And the best online dating profile tip for men is….

Let me write your online dating profile for you. Because I use all your words, anecdotes – and even your expressions – it will end up sounding as though you wrote (in other words, an honest representation of you). Plus, it will be written in the most persuasive way. After all, it’s what I’m trained to do. See for yourself by checking out my samples of online dating profiles.

Better yet, get started with the personality test and then submit your answers to me. You’ll be amazed at what I can do with them.
