One person. Two dating profiles.

In advertising, we test everything. It’s common for one client to have  two separate landing pages to see which one will do a better job of converting. It’s also typical for a client to test their latest marketing campaign to a previous one. It’s even standard to compare one word to another. Whether the details are big or small, it’s good marketing practice to review what’s working and what isn’t, then revise accordingly. I often encourage singles dating online to… read more

The question every single online dater asks (and the answer).

I read an online dating blog the other day chastising men to “man up”. The writer gave a lot of good online dating advice and I agreed with all her points except one. She thinks men should ask a woman for her number. I think that’s a bad idea. Generally speaking the rules of courtship apply to online dating just as they do to offline. However, you still have to remember that, while you’re online, you’re not actually dating. You… read more

Online dating is not the problem. You are.

I read an online dating advice column today where a widow of three years wrote in to say that online dating wasn’t working for her. She explained that she’d been out on several dates with men with whom she connected with. However, they didn’t connect with her. To my surprise, the advice columnist  suggested that she stop online dating because she might find better luck meeting people in person at classes or activity clubs. Huh? The widow was having success… read more

The online dating blog about mothers and other mothers.

Anyone new to this dating blog, here’s the scoop: I’m an ad writer. I also write online dating profiles using  ad techniques so that singles can compete online. I also write this odd little dating blog that combines news about men, women and (of course) advertising. Enjoy! It’s Mother’s Day. Congratulations to all the women – and Thomas Beatie – who are celebrating motherhood at this time.  Also, a special mention to the biggest mother of them all: Rush Limbaugh.… read more

An online dating blog about hoodies, Geraldo and hope.

I write ads. I write dating profiles. I also write a blog that incorporates both. I once had a cat who would hide his face and assume that, because he couldn’t see you, you couldn’t see him.  Given that my little guy’s intellect was designed for his needs, I didn’t expect the kind of critical thinking that I might expect from ohhhh…say…an attorney, author and award-winning journalist like… oh, I don’t know – Geraldo Rivera. Yet, this well-educated, globe-trotting reporter… read more

Online dating, free dinners, and ethics.

I just read  about Jessica Sporty, a 23-year old woman who subscribed to match.com for the sole purpose of getting free dinners. This deceptive, childish and self-entitled behavior led to countless articles about her ethics. As you might expect, many people were horrified and outraged by her behavior. This article questions the legitimacy and logistics of the story. Of all the articles I read, it’s my favorite because it’s not as quick to comment as it is to question. I… read more

Craft an online dating profile that singles you out.

I write ads. I also write online dating profiles using subtle, but effective ad techniques (check out my online dating profile samples and see for yourself). Here are  excerpts from an article I wrote for Betty Confidential where I was asked to provide tips on how to write an online dating profile that works. Want to go from being one of many to being the one? Then do what advertisers do – market yourself. Chicken McNuggets are to die for… read more

Online dating and lovable quirks.

Not long ago, I was on King 5 TV’s New Day Northwest. In conversation with the host, Margaret Larson (a lovely person who donates much of her time to humanitarian causes), we talked about how charming quirks can be. Of all the aspects of my work, discovering a person’s unique quirks is one that I always enjoy. They’re endearing and so entertaining. As such, rather than keep these nuggets to myself, I’ve decided to share some that I’ve collected over the… read more

Online dating profiles? Talk about drama!

People say words hurt. Certainly this was true during an incident many years ago when my words had near-fatal consequences (for me). It happened on dark and stormy night in a deep, deserted forest. Okay, actually, that’s not true. It was a bright, sunny summer day and I was on a rooftop catching rays with three other woman, but still – drama and danger lurked as surely as it would have had I been a nubile cheerleader using an outhouse… read more

Online dating and saying thank you.

You’re online dating. There are millions of choices out there yet somehow, among them, someone sees you. They send an email. It’s friendly. It’s classy. It sounds crafted to you instead of being generic. What do you do? If you’re interested, you write back. If you’re not interested, and you’re like most people, you move it to the trash. Lovely behavior. You must be so proud. Ironically, I bet you probably think there are a lot of jerks out there,… read more
